Am I the only busy mum?

Well this week has been manic as usual.  Birthday parties, work, admin, sewing advent calendars, Easter Egg hunts.....  Yes, I did say Advent Calendars and Easter Egg hunts...In May!  A bit topsy turvy, but the calendars are an order for a very organised customer and the Easter Egg hunt was with friends and had been delayed from Good Friday and this has been the first opportunity we've had to do it!  Crazy!

I love doing the advent calendars, it's a lovely mix of hand sewing which I adore and using the machine to put it all together to get a great final product.  And it's great to know they will become something that a child will use year after year.  I've also just had the idea to create filler packs so people can buy the toys to go in the Advent Calendar at the same time, to save chasing round trying to find 24 little items to go in them!  Why am I thinking about Advent when I've barely decided what I'm having for tea!  This is my problem, I get distracted with ideas for Mummy Duck and forget about the boring stuff that needs doing today!  Anyone else find this?

Talking of getting distracted, I forgot to write about what the title refers to.  I'm just wondering if I'm the only busy mum, or the only one with any tips for survival?  Surely not!  I have a fab competition running at the moment, but have so far had no entries.  Come on, I need some top tips!!!!  So here's another I've come up with, but would love to hear from more of you.

Top Tip Number 4
Nobody's Perfect!!!!!

As much as we'd like to think we are Supermum and can do everything perfectly, we have to admit that we can't be perfect at everything and not beat ourselves up about it.  My downfall is definitely housework and cooking!!!  Everyone asks me, how do you manage your jobs, and Mummy Duck and 2 children.  The answer is very clear if you look at my house and our 'menu'!  But I figure I can just do my best, so we muddle along and one day I'll suddenly find the time to do everything perfectly, but not today!

Top Tips?

Sitting here on a Sunday morning with my daughter snuggled against me watching tv made me think of another of my top tips. I find it hard doing my sewing when I want to spend time with her, but sometimes time (or lack of it!) means I have to.  So I've been involving her in my sewing more.  She loves it, as she gets to make little bits and pieces while I do my orders.  Of course it slows me down, but I think it's worth it, and who knows, give it a few years and she might be able to help me with my orders!  She also visits me at most fairs I do, and is quite proud of saying her Mummy does Mummy Duck Designs.  Sorting buttons is a favourite activity of hers, and is also quite helpful!  I'm not sure my son will be so impressed when he gets older, but hey, if it works with one of my children then that's got to be good!  I'm no perfect Mum, believe me, so if anyone else has more top tips on how they manage, please do get in touch and I can include them in my blog.  Oh and watch out for a competition I'll be running which could mean your top tips win you a Mummy Duck Designs prize.

Top tip number 3:
If possible, involve your children in your work.  Even if this is just talking about it with them, or asking them to help choose fabrics/materials etc...  Even if they can't genuinely be involved, I have found it helps to prevent them seeing work as something separate to them, which is very negative.  My daughter certainly sees Mummy Duck Designs as a positive thing that she loves being part of.

How to survive being a working Mum!!!

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding it hard being a working mum.  Whether you work a couple of hours a week, or have 3 jobs alongside looking after your children, there is always that balancing act of wanting to do well at everything.  And of course, then there's the guilt!

I love my jobs - all 3 of them!  But it is such a juggling act, trying to do the best for my children, whilst doing my best in my jobs to provide a good life for them.

So I thought, why don't I try to share some top tips with fellow Mums, and perhaps they'll share some of theirs with me?  So here's the first two of mine, and I hope to share more over the coming weeks.  Please feel free to share yours with me, as a comment below, on facebook or tweet me, either fun ones like the first one below, or more serious practical ones about balancing family life and working life.

Top Tip Number 1:
Always keep the hoover or duster out near the front door.  That way, if anyone comes round and the house isn't clean you can casually say, 'Oh you just caught me about to do the cleaning!'

Top Tip Number 2:
If necessary, schedule time in the week for family time.  Whilst in a perfect world this shouldn't be necessary, we all know how life tends to take over and before you know it it's been a week and you haven't stopped to spend time just doing something fun with your kids and partner.  So put a time in your diary each week if you need to just to have fun!
